ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Government College of Art is one of the leading colleges of Fine Arts in India and the only one in North India beyond Delhi. It has history and heritage of 142 years and has been in existence over 55 years in the present building. It came up on 16th August, 1951 as a splinter of Mayo School of Art, Lahore in Pakistan after partition. It was first established as Govt. School of Art and Crafts at Shimla, the then capital of Punjab and subsequently Govt. College of Art and Craft in Chandigarh was established by the Puniab Government on 16th August 1951. Following the reorganization of the Punjab State with effect from 1st November 1966, the control of this institution came under Chandigarh Administration. Govt. College of Art is an institute for advance training in Visual Arts (Creative and Applied) leading to the professional Degree programme of Bachelor of Fine Arts & Master of Fine Arts from Panjab University. The objective of the teaching programme and training in the college is to achieve overall refinement of the students' perception not confined to the skills of the profession alone but also to create the right kind of intellect, as well as emotional cultivation to arrive at a level of composite creativity and thought.

In terms of infrastructure the college takes pride of being one of the best wherein all the modern equipments and technology is provided to the students for making them cognizant with the latest tools. The college has large and spacious studios with unique provision of natural lights which happens to be the signature style of Le-Corbusier, the French architect, who is creator of the first beautiful city Chandigarh with modern architecture representing ushering of India into the modern era.

The institution is situated in Sector 10-C, adjoining the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, at a distance of nearly 2 kms from the local Bus Stand in Sector 17 and 10 Kms from railway station. It has own campus sprawled over 10 acres adjacent to Govt. Museum and Art Gallery. Chandigarh is called 'The City beautiful' with clean air, gardens and center of education and learning. It has been rated as the most liveable city in the country- has University, the best medical facilities and the best climatic conditions. Chandigarh is 250 km from Delhi, approachable by air, rail and road.
